heal.abstractBy exploiting a recently developed metal matrix composite manufacturing technique, 10 mu m diameter TiC and TiB2 particles have been introduced into liquid Al and their ability to encourage grain refinement has been studied. It was observed that in melts with very low Ti contents, TiC particles consistently grain refined both superpurity Al and Al-4Cu alloys and the extent of grain refinement increased with increasing particle additions. These observations confirm theoretical predictions for grain refinement based on the close face centred cubic matching between TiC and Al. No significant grain site reductions were observed in either of these alloys as a result of TiB2 particle additions, confirming the ineffectiveness of TiB2 as a grain refining agent in the absence of significant quantities of Ti in the liquid.en
