The primary goal of this study is to empirically investigate the effect of inward FDI on trade flows in the UK. The need for using disaggregated data in order to identify the multiple, and often contradictory, effects of foreign production on trade is well-documented (Swenson, 2004; and Blonigen, 2001). Hence, we construct measures that correspond to the industry-, manufacturing-, and total-FDI. Overall, our findings indicate the presence of complementary effects of inward FDI on trade patterns mainly at higher levels of aggregation.en
