The role of training of primary school teacher in the understanding of dyslexia (Master thesis)

Several studies have focused on the detection of the views of primary school teachers on the understanding and management of dyslexia in educational practice. Children with dyslexia have deficits in reading, writing and spelling due to poor phonological awareness, and so the appropriate adjustment and modification of educational practices is urgently required to teach these children. Similar research findings in other countries show that the primary teachers know basic information about dyslexia, but do not feel confident enough in teaching them due to lack of proper training. This study aims through empirical research to document the level of knowledge of teacher’s primary for specific reading difficulty and while examining the role played by training in understanding the views of teachers of elementary concerning the theoretical background of dyslexia but practices concerning its treatment in schools. To conduct the research, 100 primary and special education teachers were used as research subjects from the city of Agrinio region. The results of the statistical analysis show that teachers have a decent knowledge level about dyslexia satisfactorily, however, they evaluate with neutrality the training they have received in their preservice training. It is also confirmed that training in the field of dyslexia, especially in the professional field, helps them to better respond to teaching dyslexic children and thus to properly adjust their teaching. Suggestions for further research steps and limitations are stated after the discussion of the results.
