The scandal of “Prologos” of ‘Lyrikos Vios’ by Angelos Sikelianos (Master thesis)

Μακαρίου, Αλεξάνδρα

The publication of ‘Prologos’ of “Lyrikos Vios” by Angelos Sikelianos in September 1st, 1942, created a scandal during the German Occupation. The perception of “Prologos” by the critics during the 1940s seems to be a very interesting issue. This can be explained by the disputes and the conflicts concerning idelogical beliefs among the critics that reflect the general ideological conflicts that take place at the same time within the society. The main reasons that this conflict took place can be detected first of all in the language and the literary style of the text. Furthermore it was a text where A. Sikelianos analyses himself, his poetry, and his opinion about life. Writing this text he focuses only on a very small part of the population, on an ‘elit’. During the German Occupation emerges the demand of the popular majority for a mass production of literature and the demand to be this literature clear and easily understandable. The leftist critics expressed their opposition for this text because they wanted literature to be easy and understandable by the people. Moreover the journalists expressed their opposition, because they worked in wide-circulation newspapers, therefore it was eloquent to demand texts that can be easily and widely understood. Finally some anticommunist critics were negative about this text due to personal confrontation with Sikelianos. On the contrary, Sikelianos was supported by the most eminent representatives of the 1930’s generation, that had conservative beliefs, through Nea Estia magazine. Although that Sikelianos didn’t take part during this conflict he was really annoyed. However, his opinion and his way of thinking has started to change from the second half of the 1940’s. He became less arrogant while he wrote his tragedies “Sibylla” and “O thanatos tou Digeni”, that have antifascist meanings. The reactions against “Prologos” can be explained by the time of publication. On the one hand this time the impact of the left party is obvious in the majority of the population, on the other hand during the german Occupation took place several of reclassifications in the fields of literature. Most of the people wanted an art that could be easily understandable and could express their thoughts and emotions, affected by the facts that took place in the society at the same time. ‘Prologos’ was the cause and offered the appropriate context in order to express their demand.
