Fundamental motor skills are a significant kind of skills for children since they form the basis on which the subsequent development of their whole personality is taking place. Basic manipulative skills are only one part of basic motor skills and are crucial because, among other things, they form the motor basis for successful participation in every physical and sport activity during adolescence and adulthood. Basic manipulative skills development is achieved through the implementation of different types of physical education programs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of music listening on the development of manipulative skills in kindergarten and first grade of primary school children. To be more specific, we tried to investigate whether the five and six year-old children’s performance on the basic manipulative skills would be better with the simultaneous listening of music stimuli or not. One hundred and seventy five children (93 boys and 82 girls: M=5,43±0,63) participated in the study, 91 of which were taught the skills of throwing, catching, kicking, dribbling, horizontal hitting and rolling with a developmentally appropriate physical education program while listening to pieces of classic music, and 84 were taugh the same skills with the same program but without the classic music listening. The intervention program lasted for 20 weeks in the kindergarten and for 14 weeks in the early elementary classes. The Second Edition of Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD-2) was used for the assessment of manipulative skills. The main evidences of this study were: (a) developmentally appropriate physical education programs play significant role in manipulative motor skills development- both experimental and control group exhibited large improvement in all the six skills, ranged in different but significant levels and (b) classic music listening made the above mentioned improvement even larger. Conclusively, it seems that when five and six year-old children are being taught manipulative motor skills with developmentally appropriate physical education program in settings of music listening these skills are being better developed and performed.
