Direct reaction of mercury(H) iodide with pyridine-2-thione (pytH) or thiazoline-2-thione (tzdtH) in a 1:2 molar ratio, results in the formation of [HgI2(PytH)(2)] (1) and [HgI2(tzdtH)(2)] (2), respectively. The complexes have been characterised by elemental analysis and FT-Raman, FT-IR, UV-Vis and H-1, Hg-119-NMR spectroscopy. Crystal structures Of [bis (pyridine-2-thione) di-iodo mercury(II)] (1) and [bis(thiazolidine-2-thione) di-iodo mercury(II)] (2) complexes have been determined by x-ray diffraction at 100(1) K and 293(2) K respectively. Molecules (1) and (2) are monomers with a tetrahedral geometry around the metal ion with two iodine and two sulphur atoms co-ordinated to mercury(II). An extended intermolecular linkage via N-(HI)-I-... or N-(HS)-S-... interactions leads to an one dimensional extended lattice structure in case of complex (2), and a three dimensional extended network in case of complex (1). The light sensitivity of the complex (1) is also evaluated.en
