Paul Gneftos (1862-1956), paediatrician, writer and folklorist, from Rhodes, lived and worked in Alexandria, Egypt. His primary literary interests were the collection, study and publishing of folk songs from Rhodes from the first decade and on of our century. The present paper aims at first to reconstruct, as accurately as possible, Gneftos’ unclear biographical data, and at the same time to examine his pioneer work in the field of folk songs from Rhodes.
