The small collection of old printed books presented in this Catalogue belongs to the Monasteries of the historical Island of Ioannina, especially to the Panagia Eleoussa, and to their famous schools, like the Hieratic School. The historical circumstances including the collective activities of the various travellers, collectors and scholars —mainly during the 19th century— effected the dispersion of a great part of the books. It must be said that the greatest number of these identified copies are liturgical and that the first book of our Catalogue offers a remarkable indication regarding the beginning of the Monastery of Eleoussa. The abbots of this Monastery Gregorius, Habacuc and especially Meletius were distinguished into the organization of the libraries; in these there are registered today about 750 volumes, which span the years between 1527- 1937. Also available are periodicals and journals —comprised mainly since the first half of 19th century— there are also found many leaflets and various pamphlets. Many of the books preserve the original bookbinding of Venice. We add that the Monasteries also possessed manuscripts in great number, but today there are preserved only 15. The 115 books of the Catalogue are distinguished locally as follows: editions of Venice 90, Leipzig 6, Basel 3, Iasi 2, Petersburg 2, Amsterdam 1, Budapest 1, Bucharest 1, Kehl 1, Coburg 1. Constantinople 1, Moscow 1, Oxford 1, Padova 1, Paris 1, Tirgoviste 1, and of Toulouse-Nimes 1. In addition, some of these editions are very rare and represent the cultural level of the Epirus area in the 18th and 19th centuries.en
