The following study represents our issues in two areas: 1) work relations of artists-producers (in particular iconographers, wood carvers and silversmiths), eiher between them and the assignor of the work, or in the framework of teacher-artist to his student. 2) relations referring to the artist’s fees. Our examples (over 100 cases) has been taken from the Ionian Island area. That is, an area operating as crossroads between the Orthodox East and the Latin West and at the time period (17th-19th centuries) during which the Venetian and the British dominated the Ionian Islands. It should also be noted that we were especially concerned, not by the few the prominent personalities but mainly by the large population of the less known iconographers and wood carvers. They were noted to work more often after every destructible earthquake in the Ionian area. When the needed, they reconstructed churces, monasteries and the decoration of these works of art. From our sample research, we conclude that talent is of course the basic factor in the practice of the iconography and wood carving but the artisty performance itself, takes practically a character of trade with all the factors defining the work’s form. Thus the practice of art is done for bread-winning purposes. Therefore, we find ourselves in front of a clearly social phenomenon. The above mentioned characteristics are shown in the agreement documents attached which also include certain conditions: the time period allowed for the work’s execution, the construction material, the quality and the fee, be it in kind or money. When the agreement refers to teaching of the art, the teacher’s and the stydent’s respponsibilites are inscribed: good teaching, the time period (5-7 years), the student’s commitment to obeying the teacher, regular attendance and the supply of clothing and board which is the reponsibility of the teacher. This type of agreement is noted mainly with teachers who are known artists like P. Doxiadis, Stephanos Tsangarolas, Gerasimos Pitsamanos, Nicholaos Koutouzis, Nicholaos Kantounis as well as the less known like Antonios Kourcoumelis, Antonios Miniatis, Ioannis Karidis, Ioannis Moschetis, Angoulos Moschetis etc. This working relationship of the 17th century changes in the 19th century. While in the 17th and 18th centuries, the artist was paid in kind, (wheat, meat, cheese, clothing material), this kind of payment gradually lessened and by the end of the 19th century, payment was made only in money. This clearly shows the influence of a monetaly economy. This is another factor showing the professional character of art which is performance directly influenced and differentiated by the economic methods of production and the overall social progress.en
