Ο Ρόλος της εικόνας στα σχολικά εγχειρίδια ιστορίας της δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης (1950-2000) (Doctoral thesis)

The aim of this research is to detect the apparent and the hidden functions that the pictures perform in the History textbooks. The material of this research is roughly constituted by 4500 pistures and the relevant to them texts. In the analysis, an original method was used which is based on the general principles of content analysis and combines quantitative and qualitative criteria. According to this, the picture was faced as a structural composition of three functions, didactic, ideological and aesthetic. In each one of the above, further divisions were made. In the thesis, chapters relevant to the curricula and the History textbooks of the period 1950 - 2000 in Greece were included, as well as to the role of History of Art. The research led up to a number of conclusions that have to do with the instructive value and the effectiveness of illustration, the visual perceptions of the past, the ideological use of pictures and the aesthetic criteria and models that are demonstrated.
