Silence (Master thesis)
This thesis focuses on silence. It is divided into four parts. "The field of expression" is a prologue that attempts to define the (multiple) areas of influence of silence, its expressive craftsmanship (inexhaustible ability); but above everything else the direct affinity of each expressive way with our own body. The first chapter concentrates on references to silences – both explicit and ineffable –, to its historical transformations, to the ways in which the atmosphere of silence defines the social context, the social identity of everyone (indivisibly from what is perceived as “self”). The references here are various; including Homer and the ancient tragedians, Clastres and Bourdieu. The second chapter outlines the aesthetic dimension of silence that infiltrates every sense. More specifically: Music, directly interwoven, dependent upon silence; Cinema, which often visualizes silence; and loss, the silence of a life, an absence that disturbs (modifies) every expression and diffuses silences at every level of human perception. The third chapter deals with certain theological examples of silence (Saint Augustine, John Climacus, etc.) and with some exemplary cases of silence in literature (Beckett, Dante, Genet, Melville, Proust). Although precise in terms of intention, the aforementioned divisions per chapter are not strict: one will find similar references from one chapter to another; references to philosophers (Spinoza, Deleuze, Kierkegaard, Merleau-Ponty) that are infused throughout this text. The subject, to a great extent, chose and wrote itself; you are given a life, and in return life gives you questions that teach you to be what you are and try to express it. The silent remains silent – but, often, it loses something of its compact nature, it exhibits cracks: of words, of interpretation, of unutterable expression. Upon these cracks this thesis attempts to be placed; these cracks are its object.
