The present research explores the notion of the effective school principle, as this is justified in the relevant bibliography. Initially the review of the existing bibliography defines the notions of educative system, school and effective school. It also considers the conditions and characteristics of school effectiveness and there is a reference to the education movement of school effectiveness. Subsequently, the principle's contribution to the school's effectiveness is highlighted and at the same time there are presented the methods and strategies he is obliged to follow to achieve his goal. Furthermore, the principle's role is investigated, according to the theoretical and inquiring approaches of the school effectiveness, in performing the school duties that are derived from his role as principal. What is also analyzed are the characteristics, skills and abilities that make him effective as a principle. Finally, there is examined whether it is possible to effectively fulfill his role in the greek reality. The main conclusion of the research is that the principle's contribution in the school's effectiveness is decisive, as this is largely dependent on the factors of school efficiency. It is also noted that the role of the effective principle is versatile, complex, demanding and is not limited in an administrative and performing role. Finally we assume that in Greece, the principle has got mainly an executive role with limited leading responsibilities. He has to manage and control many directives and orders coming from the central ministry administration as a result on the one hand of a centralised system and on the other of a selection system for staff and executives that does not aim at their qualitative development in their role.
