Preparation and characterization of advanced nanohybrid materials with the use of nanoparticles and triblock terpolymer matrices (Doctoral thesis)

The current tendency of exploiting BCP matrix for large area periodic structures hasattracted significant academic and commercial interest due to the simplicity of processing. Theconcept of fabricating novel functional materials through selective incorporation of variousnanofillers (such as nanoparticles in this thesis) within one polymer domain belonging todiBCP either triBCPs, makes them excellent candidates for the generation of highly organizedhybrid materials.Using the “grafting to” method, presynthesized iron oxide and noble metalnanoparticles were modified with surface chemistry approaches in order to attachhomopolymer chains onto the particles periphery. As a final goal, these can be directly used asnanosize inorganic inclusions by mixing them with BCP solutions. For this purpose, diblockcopolymer and triblock terpolymer systems of thermoplastic elastomers comprising of widelyused polymer blocks such as polystyrene, poly(butadiene) and poly(isoprene) were used as thedirecting self-assembled pattern. All synthetic efforts were conducted via anionicpolymerization techniques according to high vacuum standards.Subsequently, to investigate how the particles incorporation affects the existingmorphologies AFM and TEM imaging of the resultant composite films illustrated potentialmorphological developments. Additionally, TGA, XRD, surface ellipsometry, 1H-NMR andSEC instrumentation was used for investigating the success of the research work involved in this dissertation. To increase chain mobility and control the evolution of the time dependentphases, thermodynamically driven processes of solvent vapor annealing and thermal annealingwere proven to be of extreme importance.
