Η αριστεία ως κίνητρο στην εκπαίδευση (Master thesis)
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the views of primary school pupils in the prefecture of Ioannina on excellence as a learning and performance motivation. The study consists of two parts: the theoretical and the empirical part. In the theoretical part the conceptual framework of educational assessment and students’ performance evaluation are presented. Also, reference is made to the types, the principles, the purposes and the pedagogical function of the students’ performance assessment. Subsequently, there is an attempt to identify the forms that assessment can take, its stages, and the techniques by which a student can be evaluated, as well as the means of expressing the assessment result. Then, a brief approach is made over pupils’ motivation in order to pursue high performance and excellence and also which factors influence pupils to achieve this goal. The empirical part of the current work includes the methodology research, the presentation of the research findings, discussion over these findings, the formulation of conclusions and suggestions. According to the research results, for the students assessment mainly uses traditional assessment techniques in combination with some alternative techniques and the results are expressed using numerical score, verbal phrasing and to a lesser extent with a descriptive assessment. At the same time, there is a positive attitude of students towards the use of descriptive assessment but in combination with the numerical score. The pupils’ mental mood during the evaluation process is affected as this process generates feelings of joy and satisfaction over their progress and at the same time, anxiety and distress to achieve the highest possible performance. Pupils stated that their assessment result affects them and that they prefer to be informed about their evaluation result with the use both numerical score and descriptive assessment. Also, most pupils have endogenous learning incentives and feel their performance is not affected by external factors, but only by making personal effort. The majority of students wish to achieve excellence and achieve high performances. In addition, they recognize in the concept of excellent students qualitive features associated with elements such as communication skills, participation, consistency, diligence, etc. and not only high cognitive skills and performance. Ultimately, there are highlighted some parameters that, according to pupils’ opinions, contribute to the achievement of excellence and the emerge of excellent pupils such as frequent feedback through the assessment process, the use of descriptive assessment, the intensification of efforts and the existence of small and achievable goals.
