Life of Eustratios of Agaurwn (BHG 645) (Doctoral thesis)
Ζαραβέλα, Ευαγγελία Λ.
This doctoral dissertation refers to the Life of saint Eustratios, hegoumenos of the Agaurwn monastery at the mount Olympos in Bithynia. The Life has been edited in codex Sabbaiticus by number 242 and is located in the Patriarchal Library of Jerusalem. It consists of 398 folia, while Eustratiοs' Life begins from folio 104a to 140a. The first edition of Life was made in 1897 by Papadopoulos-Kerameas. Saint Eustratios was born at the end of the 8th century (791) in a town called Biztinianas, which is located in Tarsia in the theme of Optimatoi. The upbringing he received from his parents, George and Megethw was in line with the Christian principles. He remained with his family until the age of twenty, when he decided to follow the monasticism. He decided to go to Olympοs, where his maternal uncles lived as monks, Gregorios, hegoumenos of the Agaurwn monastery and Basileios. Eustratios was distinguished in the monastery for his exemplary behavior and after the death of hegoumenos Efstathios, the successor of his uncle Gregorios became hegoumenos of the Agaurwn monastery. The rise to the rule of Leo V the Armenian (813) and the restoration of Iconoclasm resulted in Eustratios leaving the monastery. After restoring the icons he returned to the monastery, where he continued his charitable action. He died 886 on January 10 at the age of 95. During his life he performed a multitude of miracles and even his relic was as much miraculous. The biographer of Eustratios was one of the monks of the monastery, who wanted to remain anonymous. The doctoral dissertation includes introduction, critical edition of the text, translation and commentary. The main objective is to correct the text of the first edition. The several lacunae in the manuscript do not allow the text to be fully restored because Life is not delivered in another manuscript.
