Jewelry brand in Greece (20th -21st century) (Doctoral thesis)

Ανδριανού, Αικατερίνη

First of all the paper briefly presents the temporal presence of jewelry as a result of this innate human disposition, especially that of the woman for decoration, and then, starting with the above approach, is analysed the dynamic evolution of modern Greek silversmith in the jewelry sector in the context of historical and cultural developments in Greece after the war (second half of the 20th century) until today (beginning of the 21st century). Since the mid-19th century, women in urban society have mainly followed the European “trains” of honor and worn mainly jewelry from European workshops. With the passage of time pure Greek jewelry began to be created, especially after the middle of the 20th century, which not only dominated the local market but also became distinguished abroad. Of particular interest are the jewels which were created mainly during the 1950s by great artists - craftsmen who impress with the imagination of their creations. The case study, which was analysed in detail in the research work, was Ilias Lalaounis, who, with his "golden" creations, added a heavy and valuable link in the chain of Greek jewelry after the war, giving it at the same time a prominent place in the world. His genius idea of reviving Greek jewelry in the 1950s was a great success and undoubtedly changed not only his life and career but also the course of contemporary Greek jewelry. At the same time, the goldsmith Lalaounis demonstrated not only his inexhaustible ability to create but also his constant search for new ideas (with designs based on modern technology, astronomy, nature and biology). Lalaounis received many awards for his pioneering offer in the jewelry sector, the highest honor being that of the French Academy of Fine Arts (Académie des Beaux Arts, Institut de France). Finally, the paper presents the museological politics in the promotion of jewelry in general, since 1993 when Lalaounis and his younger daughter, Ioanna, founded the Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum (ILJM), which exhibits the most representative creations of the artist from his 50 collections of jewels and micro sculptures, designed between 1950 and 2002.
