School bullying and depictions of diversity in modern children's and youth's literature (2008-2018) (Master thesis)

This paper analyzes the phenomenon of School Bullying and the depictions of diversity in Modern Children's and Youth’s Literature during the decade 2008-2018. To begin with the first chapter, various definitions of school bullying are presented. Moreover, reference is made to the specific characteristics of the perpetrator, the victim and the bystanders. In addition, the selected literary books are categorized into one of the following forms of bullying: Verbal and Physical Intimidation, Social Exclusion, Racist Intimidation, Intimidation and Students with Speech Disorders, and Cyberbullying. Moreover, the factor of diversity and its effect on school bullying is presented. It, also, highlights the important role of School and Literature towards School Violence. Continuing with the second chapter, the children's literary books and the criteria of their choice are introduced. More specifically, the selection of literary books was based on their recent release, their theme about school violence, the age of their reading audience, their awards, and their suggestions from the city's bookstores. Additionally, Gerard Genette's narrative discourse theory is presented, followed by a summary and an extensive analysis of the books. The third chapter discusses some of the peritextual features of books and particularly: the importance of cover and its image, the meaning of the title and characters’ types. Furthermore, the connection between the images of the books and the narrative techniques, as stated in the second chapter, is examined. In conclusion the results of this paper are presented.
