Environmental education in natural protected areas (Master thesis)
Despite its significance, the educational work of the Management Authorities of Natural Protected Areas has been scarcely explored. The need for implementation of educational programs for both citizens of local community and the natural protected areas is evident according to literature review. The purpose of this study is to report to what extent Greek management authorities implement educational programs and actions as well as to highlight the key features and potential of these action programs/ actions. More specifically, the research objectives concern: 1) investigation of the relationship between authorities and the local communities, 2) recording the profile of the individuals who plan and implement educational programs-actions, 3) identification of key features of these programs and actions, 4) reporting the estimated impact of the programs-actions on the local community and the protected area, 5) reporting the problems and difficulties that the authorities have to deal with during the implementation of the programs-actions, and 6) reporting the needs for upgrading educational programs-actions. The data were collected with semi - structured interviews in depth by employees in 21 protected areas in Greece. The interviews were analyzed using the qualitative analysis method. The results show that all the authorities which participated in study implement educational programs and actions with significant benefits to citizens and protected areas despite the difficulties that are faced.
