The presentation of childhood in the school textbooks of modern greek language in primary school (Master thesis)
The present work deals with the presentation of childhood in the school textbooks of the Primary School Language. Undoubtedly, childhood is a given period of time in every person's life.Childhood and child perceptions vary from season to era and are directly dependent on any changes in the social institutions and the value system of each society. School textbooks are the main teaching tools in everyday school reality.The Language Course is taught in all classes of the Primary School and covers the highest rate of teaching hours in the timetable.A qualitative approach to content analysis has sought to identify childhood representations in all school textbooks in the primary school.The editing of school textbooks was done by class. The following thematic categories were identified: a) Characteristics of children b) Child and family c) Child and friends d) Child and school e) Child and adults of the wider social environment f) Acquaintance with children from other countries g) Acquaintancewithchildren'srights h) Child and environment i) Child and leisure The school textbooks of the language course present childhood as an age during which members have specific features.Most texts focus on the interpersonal and social relationships of children.Children in modern school textbooks are presented as active social subjects who show their personal interest in children from other countries, for their rights,in protecting the environment. They take advantage of free time by participating in pleasant and creative activities. This research study has resulted in valuable knowledge about the representation of childhood in the school textbooks of the Language.Its findings could be data for future discussion and research.
