Psychosocial adjustment of students at the University (Master thesis)

Entrance to the University is an important transition for most emerging adults. Some students manage to successfully deal with the requirements of the new framework, while others are struggling to cope adequately with the new challenges of the University environment. Adaptation of students and the less or more successful transition to the new Educational Framework has attracted the interest of many researchers in the field. According to the international literature, the student population, compared to individuals of the same age, who operate outside the University, faces more psychosocial adjustment problems. The aim of this study was to investigate family, psychosocial and individual factors related to the adaptation of students. The sample of the survey consisted of 347 first and second year students of both sexes who attended various faculties of the University of Ioannina. Participants were asked to complete the following psychometric tools: (i) Student Adjustment to College Questionnaire (SACQ; Baker & Syric, 1989), (ii) Interpersonal Support Evaluation List, College version (ISEL; Cohen & Hoberman, 1983), (iii) Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale III (FACES III; Olson, Portner, & Lavee, 1985), (iv) State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI; Spielberger, Gorsuch, & Lushene, 1970), and (v) Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CESD; Radloff, 1977). Statistical analyses revealed that the successful adaptation of the students to the University was positively related to the emotional cohesion of the family and to the social support, while it is negatively related to the presence of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Also, social support and family cohesion were found to be negatively related to anxiety and depressive symptoms to students.
