Η ενσυναίσθηση των ειδικών παιδαγωγών ως παράγοντας διαμόρφωσης της αυτοεκτίμησης των μαθητών που φοιτούν σε τμήματα ένταξης (Master thesis)

It is a fact that teachers` empathy plays an important role in the relationship they develop with their students in the context of school life. If the teachers are characterized by high levels of empathy, they can have a better understanding of their student`s deeper needs, in contrast to teachers who lack empathy. Also, the students` self-esteem has great significance, since their school development is judged by how high levels of self-esteem they possess. This research attempts to probe into the empathy of special education teachers and the significance it has to the conformation of self-esteem possessed by students who attend to integration classes. More specifically, the sample of research was 30 integration classes, along with their 30 special needs teachers, in which attended 210 students, of whom 114 were boys and 96 girls. The control group included 30 general education teachers and 210 students -114 boys and 96 girls- who attended 30 typical elementary school classes. Based on the sample above, except the teachers` empathy and its correlation with their students` self-esteem, we examined whether the students attending the integration classes are lacking self-esteem compared to students attending typical classes. Results have shown that the teachers` empathy indeed affects student`s self-esteem and the separation of students to integration classes has a negative impact on their self-esteem. This research can be used for redesigning teaching ways in integration classes, so that teachers, through their work and action in class, can help students with low self-esteem to repair the negative image they have for themselves and to “build” high levels of self-esteem.
