Εκπαιδευτικά προγραμματιστικά περιβάλλοντα στην πρωτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση (Master thesis)
The study aims to present the results of a comparative study of Novice Programming Environments (NPE) based on pedagogical and technological characteristics, indicating similarities and differences and how these environments can be used in an empirical study of student’s progress. Three novice programming environments of different technological and pedagogical features, Code.org StarlogoTNG and Scratch were utilized and used to teach various programming concepts in two groups of the sixth grade at an elementary school, such as loops, conditions, events, variables and procedures. The results of the study, that arise from the Hierarchical Assessment of Programming, have shown that NPEs contribute to the educational process, to the understanding of programming concepts, and to the constructing of integrated projects. They also showed that there is no difference in learning outcomes and in performance between the two sexes when used different NPEs. The students’ opinion, without any significant statistical difference, highlighted Code.org as the easiest environment that helped students to identify and correct their mistakes, StarlogoTNG as the most useful environment that helped the creation of three-dimensional projects in a more entertaining way and Scratch as the most exciting environment that helped on familiarization and deeper understanding of programming concepts. The NPEs have transformed the programming into an attractive and enjoyable process, creating feelings of sympathy and at the same time they eliminated the negative feelings of fear and anxiety.
