Positive traits, psychological well - being and pain in patients with diseases of the gastrointestinal system (Master thesis)
Objective: Investigation of the relationship between positive characteristics and reported pain in patients with Functional Gastrointestinal Diseases (FGIDs) and Irritable Bowel Diseases (IBDs). Design: Participants (N = 100) completed the Resilience Scale, the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS) in order to investigate positive dimensions and the Numeric Pain Rating Scale for their related pain. Results: Patients displayed significant negative correlations between related pain and positive characteristics. There were no significant differences between groups on positivity but in Crohn’s disease group, positive characteristics were significant predictors of pain. Also education level was found to affect the psychological well – being and job status affected the total resilience and the satisfaction with life. Conclusions: No differentiations between the three main GI diagnoses, except Crohn disease, were pain was found to be affected by positive domains. Positive emotions, as coping strategies can help in a great stressor situation like an inflammation. Dealings of pain expression and other features specific to mindfulness, satisfaction with life and autonomy. Resilience is a positive psychological factor that affects the overall psychological well-being.
