The painting, with archaic characteristics, of the single aisle and arch-covered church of Saint Athanassios, in the village of Kato Meropi of Pogoni, dated in 1584, according to the inscription that is found in the transom of the western wall, is included in the fringe of sovereign known currents of painting of the 16th century with their 'own scholar style and monastic character. It belongs, however, in the local provincial Balkan tradition that maintains the iconographic program and the stylistic methods of painting of 14th-15th centuries, but also certain iconographic elements of the short-lived modernistic tendency of the end of the 15th century. Our simple anonymous painter continues in his iconographic program the conventional traditions of the “School” or “Schools” that acted at the end of the 15th century-beginning of the 16th century in the North Greek-Centrobalkanic area, as in his art flourish elements of the so-called in the past “School of Ohrid” or the so-called later “School of Kastoria”. This painting that stays aside from both the important currents of the famous “Schools” as the “Cretan” and the “School of North-Western Greece” of the 16th century, reflects the continuity and the maintenance of pictorial tendencies that prevailed in Kastoria and in Ohrid in the Palaeologean period and also in the 15th century. The painting of Saint Athanassios, related mainly with a group of Macedonian monuments of the 15th century, reveals that certain traditions of this century maintained in the North-Western Greece alive until the end of the next century (16th century). The same traditions, as much as for the iconographic program, and also for the style, can be found in the 16th century in Serbian monuments and actually continued to exist in this area in thel7th century. A number also of certain stylistic traits, as the linearity of outlines, the frozen drawing, the intensive contrast of light and shadow at the human faces, the dark but at the same time the poor chromatic choices, with colours that are also unable to create volumes, the schematizations in the natural and structural space and in the facial details, testify a close iconographic relation with certain Bulgarian monuments of the late 16th centuryen
