The effect of magnetic annealing on the texture is investigated in a series of CoPt films of different thickness obtained by annealing of Co/Pt multilayers. Magnetic field is found to promote the (001) texture by selective (001) grain growth driven by the magnetic field and biaxial strain. A systematic correlation between in-plane biaxial strain and the degree of (001) texture is found only for the magnetically annealed samples. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics.
